The Irish Census for 1901 has now been made available online free of charge. It now joins the 1911 census on the site of the Irish National Archives. In describing this availability in today's Irish Times, "Minister for Culture Mary Hanafin described the service as 'an important and exciting day for people all over the world who want to trace their roots'. She added: 'In a world which is very troubled, people want to know where they are rooted and are anxious to know about their background and their heritage.'" This article provides useful background about the Irish Census.
The Irish Censuses for 1901 and 1911 are the earliest surviving, complete censuses for that nation. Let the searching begin!
